US Real Estate Programs (updated May 11, 2018)

This interactive map provides a listing of real estate degree programs offered at universities in the US. It is presented as a community service to provide insights into the nature and scope of real estate education. The hope is that by increasing transparency related to real estate education and real estate centers, we can help increase access for students and foster greater inter-institutional collaboration. At the same time, the inventory may help other universities identify opportunities in to increase or modify their own educational offerings to address industry needs. On a similar note, the inventory should help professionals, associations, and other parties understand the current state of academics and identify opportunities to connect with the academic community.

Seed funding for the initial phase of this research was provided by ICSC Foundation. To see a partial list of universities offering ICSC Scholarships, turn on the filter in the lower right of the first tab. To see a partial list of CCIM Fast Track Universities, turn on the CCIM filter. Restore both to ALL to explore the rest of the offerings. Please note that real estate degree offerings change over time, and some universities might have offerings that are not displayed. If you have any updates or corrections, please Contact Me and I will update the inventory.

Organization and Usage Guide

This page consists of a a series of maps and tables presenting information related to real estate educational offerings and real estate centers. The visualization consists of five tabs that are highlighted at the top of the page including:

  • Guide to Real Estate Programs. A listing of over 300 individual degree offerings including Certificates, Concentrations, Law-related, Major, Minor, MRED, and MSRE degrees.
  • Degrees/University. The number and type of degrees offered by each university.

  • Real Estate Centers. List of real estate and related centers affiliated with universities.

In the upper right, a control bar will emerge on mouse-over to change panning, zoom, selection. If you click on the legend to the upper right, the map will highlight those results.

Some Added Features

Some interactive features include:

  • Mouse Over. If you hover over a program, additional details will be revealed.
  • Filters. You can use filters to narrow the scope. Note the filters will interact with the map so if no choices are made, the map will be blank.
  • Location. I adjusted the lat/lon to display multiple degrees upon zooming. Thus, the actual location may differ.
  • Zooming. Depending on your zoom level, roads and other features will be displayed.

Sources of Information and Disclaimer

I've been involved in the academic real estate community for over 50 years beginning with my undergraduate BBA in Real Estate from Wisconsin earned (and that is the operative term) from the late James A. Graaskamp. Since my initial real estate class, I have recognized the importance of formal real estate education. While I have moved back and forth between industry and academia, at heart I am an academic and an advocate for real estate education. Since real estate is a spatial asset with a space/time, money/time dimensions, spatial analysis is of paramount concern. the increasing complexity of decisions and externalities that they create has established a clear need for continuous learning. As a result, it is the responsibility of educational institutions to help prepare the future real estate professionals and industry leaders.

The data presented on this webpage were collected over several years, drawing from websites and other public sources. The data have not been verified and may have changed since they were compiled. At the same time, new programs have likely been launched and some existing programs have been modified and/or suspended. Thus, there may be some inadvertant errors and ommisions in the data. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the various universities and programs directly, as well as real estate organizations and trade associations, many of whom maintain a list of academic programs. This is an effort to complement those outreach initiatives.

The underlying information presented on this webpage with be periodically updated. Self-report changes are invited. Please contact me if you have any suggestions or questions. I will be developing additional pages related to real estate education and research into the underlying data I have compiled during this extended and on-going research project. Please check back for updated materials.
